Heartworm Treatment Protocol and Guidelines for Dog Owners

I live on a fixed income cannot afford vet care- I am concerned that there may be heartworms ; the little cough!!! I am trying to find her a good caring home, but until I do, I want to start to help her naturally. I am not sure how much as per her small size . Could a healthy dog's immune system fight off heartworms as well as a cat's immune sytem does? We don't know, but if someone is choosing not to give their dog a heartworm preventative of some type, doing all possible to boost the dog's immune system would seem wise.

Also since I returned to California I have not given any heartworm preventatives to any of my dogs or have I ever had to here. I had them checked when I moved to San Antonio and they came up negative. I have just recently started my dog on the black walnut/woodworm regime.

My dog has heartworms. My vet started her on monthly prevention before he started treatment. Is this OK?

Ask your veterinarian for advice about anticipating when a dosage change will be needed. Also make sure to bring your pet in for every scheduled well-puppy or well-kitten exam, so that you stay on top of all health issues, including heartworm protection. Confirm that you are giving the right heartworm preventive dosage by having your pet weighed at every visit.

I hope this might help someone, it has certainly helped my, Andy should be on his last breath by now, but thank the Lord he's still himself, no weight loss or drop in energy. Now when I'm cooking up a storm in the kitchen, my husband thinks it's for him but it's for the dog. I would like some information in treating heartworm with Black Walnut, Garlic and wormwood. And she has had this for about a year, but only coughs occasionally at this time. I would like to know if only giving her garlic would help.

I have never cried so hard in my life then I did today... I use Earth Animal Dr. Bob Goldstein’s Nature’s Protection for ticks and flees. He does get a tick every once in a while but no flees.

Wormwood is bitter so consider adding it to a sweet treat or food. You need to give it orally with the syringe that comes with it. I had never fostered before, but I was going to give it a try!

Brenda from CA wrote something that really caught my attention she rescued a dog and cured him of heartworms by feeding him VRM2-sm made by biochallege. My dog has been on this medicine for 5 days. VRM2 is a natural parasite detox that kills small foreign bodies in the blood & tissues. Normally you'd see progress in as little as 3 days, but since Sadie was so bad off with heartworm it took a little longer. But like I said I'm only on day 5 and her coughing has almost diminished.

Active dogs, dogs heavily infected with heartworms, or those with other health problems often show pronounced clinical signs. We have a very high degree of success in treating heartworm disease when we get an early diagnosis, before severe heart damage has taken place. Physical examination and laboratory testing will determine whether or not your pet should undergo treatment once heartworms are diagnosed. The microfilaria will be killed with an injection approximately 4-6 weeks after treatment to rid the dog of the adult heartworms. There they decompose and are absorbed by the body over a period of several months. The black walnut hull had and is killing the baby heartworm larve and we only had adult heartword pieces in the heartworm .Zeus only lost 2lbs during this period.

Dogs should only be allowed outside for short on-leash walks to urinate and defecate. Give your dog the full course of any prescription pet medications that have been prescribed, even if he or she appears to be healthy. Complete blood cell count, blood chemistry tests, a urinalysis and chest X-rays to assess your dog’s overall condition and plan the safest way to move forward with treatment. An echocardiogram is recommended for moderate to severe cases. Even using natural remedies, your dog should only do light activities. Depending on his energy level, he may not need to be on full crate rest .

The dog may be required to stay at the hospital for 3-4 days. After treatment, the adult worms die and are carried by the blood to the lungs where they lodge in small blood vessels. A cat that has developed heartworm disease has demonstrated that it is susceptible to heartworm infection, and both outdoor and indoor cats are at risk. It’s important to give your cat monthly heartworm preventives, which are available in both spot-on and pill form.

Most dogs benefit from receiving year-round heartworm prevention. The most important aspect of home care for dogs undergoing treatment for heartworms is exercise restriction. Dogs should be crated when a responsible adult is not able to prevent excess activity. There’s another type of conventional heartworm treatment. It involves giving heartworm preventive drugs for a year or longer, usually alongside doxycycline. The slow-kill method doesn’t use Immiticide injections.

Ready-Made Herbal Blends

This requirement might be difficult to adhere to, especially if your dog is accustomed to being active. The more severe the symptoms, the less activity your dog should have. Adult dogs over 7 months of age and previously not on a preventive need to be tested prior to starting heartworm prevention. They, too, need to be tested 6 months and 12 months later and annually after that.

I also agree about animals dying at the vet. It seems I go home with a huge bill and no animal and that is very sad! Plus the animals are so scared being left there. I also hear that wormwood can also possibly be used to treat heart worm, but of course the information I received I did not witnessed them myself.
